First Time in Dubai: What to See and Skip This Winter (2026–27)

First Time in Dubai? Focus your time on four core experiences: Downtown (Burj Khalifa & Fountain), a late-afternoon desert safari, the historic Creek district, and Global Village. Beyond that, save your money. Notable closures this season include the Museum of the Future (closed mid-September 2026 for a full overhaul through early 2027) and the Burj Al Arab (under an 18-month restoration).

Winter brings Dubai’s best weather of the year. December days sit around 24–28°C with roughly a 5% chance of rain on any given day, so almost everything you came for happens outdoors and comfortably.

What’s New In Dubai For Winter 2026–27

This winter, several of Dubai’s biggest draws are either newly seasonal or temporarily unavailable. Global Village, Dubai Miracle Garden, Dubai Safari Park, and Dubai Parks and Resorts are all back for the season, while the Museum of the Future is closed for a rebuild and Burj Al Arab is under restoration.

If this is your first trip, plan around what is open now, not what older guides still list.

Planning a first trip to Dubai this winter usually comes with too much outdated advice. This guide focuses on what is actually worth seeing right now, what is newly open or closed this season, and what first-time visitors should skip.

What’s Open, Closed, And Worth Booking This Winter

Most “Dubai 2026” guides are recycled. Two of the city’s most-photographed attractions are not open this season, and three of the best ones only exist in winter. Check this before you plan a single day.

What To Book Early

If you are coming in late December, book these first:

  • Hotel
  • Burj Khalifa time slot
  • Desert safari
  • Global Village evening
  • Airport transfer if you are arriving late

This matters most during Dubai Shopping Festival, New Year’s Eve, and school holidays.

The Best Recent Travel Highlights For First-Time Visitors

Overview map of key Dubai attractions for first-time visitors

1. Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain one evening, one place

Combining the observation deck with the fountain show is the most seamless evening plan for your first night. Book a non-prime slot for At The Top, go up while it is still light, then come down for the fountain show after dark.

At The Top (levels 124 and 125) starts at AED 169, and prices rise for sunset slots.

Then walk out to the lake. The Dubai Fountain runs shows every 30 minutes from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm daily, plus afternoon shows at 1:00 pm and 1:30 pm (2:00 pm and 2:30 pm on Fridays). The Dubai Fountain Boardwalk costs AED 25 and puts you about 10 metres from the water. The bridge to Souk Al Bahar costs nothing and offers a better all-around view.

Do it in this order, and one evening covers the two things everyone asks about.

2. An evening desert safari, the one tour first-timers never regret

Winter is the only season when the desert is genuinely comfortable. An evening safari leaves around mid-afternoon, gives you dune driving in low sun, then camp with dinner and live entertainment, and gets you back late evening.

Before booking, ask your tour operator where their camp is located and how many guests share the site. Smaller, deeper desert camps offer a vastly better experience.

3. Old Dubai: The Creek, Abras, Al Fahidi, and the gold and spice souks

Skip the morning lie-in for this one. Take the Metro Red Line to BurJuman, switch to the Green Line, and get off at Al Ras Station by 9:15 AM. Walking through the Spice Souk before 10:00 AM means you miss the tour buses that pack out the narrow alleys. Cross over to Bur Dubai on a traditional wooden abra, it still costs just 1 AED in cash, and spend an hour wandering through the wind-tower lanes of Al Fahidi.

4. Global Village, the winter-only one

Season 31 opens on 14 October 2026 and closes in May 2027. It’s 20-odd country pavilions, street food, stage shows, and fireworks in one loop, and it’s where you’ll eat the best cheap meal of the trip.

Go on a weeknight. Weekends are genuinely crowded, and the car park queue costs you an hour.

5. Dubai Frame, the cheapest good view in the city

From AED 52.50, with under-3s free. Looking out one side shows historic Old Dubai, while the other faces the modern skyline. Plan for a quick 30- to 45-minute visit.

6. A dhow cruise or the beach, depending on who you’re traveling with

Couples: an evening dhow cruise on Dubai Marina, with the towers lit on both sides. Families: Kite Beach or JBR in the afternoon, the sea is still around 23–27°C in December, which is warmer than most people expect.

What First-Timers Should Skip This Winter

These are the attractions and habits first-time guests most often regret spending time or money on:

  • Museum of the Future: Fully closed for renovations until Q1 2027; view the exterior from Sheikh Zayed Road instead.
  • A daytime desert safari: Not worth it in winter when an evening safari is better.
  • Multiple observation decks: Not worth the extra cost if you already did Burj Khalifa.
  • A car for Downtown or Marina: Skip it if you are staying in tourist-heavy areas.
  • Ski Dubai in winter: Skip it unless you specifically want an indoor snow experience.
  • Cramming Downtown and Old Dubai into one day: Still a mistake because it wastes time.
  • Paying for a private beach day: Public beaches are better value.

Do You Need A Visa For Dubai, And How Hard Is It?

Most visitors need a UAE visit visa, applied for through the official ICP or GDRFA Dubai channels. Some nationalities get a visa-on-arrival or are visa-exempt; check your passport’s rules before you book flights.

Only Tourism has arranged UAE visas since 2013 and holds a GDRFA establishment number (2/1/231425) as an inbound tour operator, so when your visa is part of a package, it’s submitted through those same official channels, no second agency, no separate paperwork.

Only Tourism L.L.C is a licensed private travel agency. It is not a government entity and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any UAE government authority. Visa applications are submitted directly through the official government channels (ICP / GDRFA Dubai).
